Verified Biography & Career Dossier
Augusta Ada King. Countess of Lovelace (December 10, 1815 – November 27, 1852) was an English mathematician and writer, chiefly known for her work on Charles Babbage's mechanical general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine. She was the only legitimate child of the poet Lord Byron and mathematician Anne Isabella Milbanke.

In 1843, Lovelace translated Luigi Menabrea's paper on the Analytical Engine, appending her own extensive annotations known simply as 'Notes'. In Note G, she described an algorithm designed to calculate Bernoulli numbers, which is universally recognized as the world's first published computer program. Lovelace foresaw that computers could manipulate symbols beyond numbers, anticipating modern computational science.
