Verified Biography & Career Dossier
Murad I (June 29, 1326 – June 15, 1389), known as Hüdavendigâr (God's devotee or Sovereign), was the 3rd Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, reigning from 1362 until his death on the battlefield in 1389. He transformed the Ottoman principality into a transcontinental empire by expanding territorial dominion across Southeastern Europe, conquering Adrianople (Edirne) and making it the imperial capital.

Murad I established the foundational institutions of the Ottoman state, including the Janissary corps (Yeniçeri) and the Devshirme recruitment system. His reign culminated in the decisive First Battle of Kosovo in 1389 against a coalition of Balkan states, where he secured victory but was assassinated on the battlefield, becoming the only Ottoman sultan to die in combat.
