LEGACY & ORIGINS
THE DEEP DIVE
Emil Jannings was a Swiss-born German actor who became a prominent figure in Hollywood cinema during the 1920s. He was the first recipient of the Academy Award for Best Actor, winning it for his role as Theodor Friedrich Emil Janenz in 'The Blue Engel' (1930). Jannings began his acting career in Rorschach, Switzerland, and later moved to Germany after the family's move to Leibnitz. He starred in several films with F. W. Murnau and Josef von Sternberg, including 'The Last Command' and 'Staatsauftragsfilme'. His work earned him a spot on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
